2010 Bulk Wine Market outlook

For most of the summer, generally benign ripening conditions prevailed across South-Eastern Australia until a significant heatwave occurred during the last week of January and first week of February. This culminated in extreme weather conditions and wildfires on 7 February 2009.

The current outlook for 2009 is for another reasonably significant crop, at least similar in size to 2008. There is currently little evidence that might suggest otherwise. If anywhere near the entire crop is harvested, this will be in excess of the Australian wine industry’s current annual sales, so it is less likely that the general market for Australian bulk wine will rise. Indeed, it is likely that we may see further falls in the bulk wine prices over the next 12 months.

Australian wine has been short for some time. The shortage is due to extremely limited water availability resulting from drought.
